Again, petitioners absence stalls probe of conduct tribunal chairman by House of Reps

The investigation of the alleged corrupt practices levelled against the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Justice Danladi Umar, by the Anti-Corruption Network, was on Wednesday stalled again following the request by the petitioners that the House of Representative Standing Committee on Public Petitions should give them more time to fully prepare for the probe
At the resumed hearing, on Wednesday, the spokesperson of the Anti-Corruption Agency who identified himself as Olusegun Abereoran pleaded with the committee to allow for more time for them to prepare their brief and submit same to the Clerk of the committee as earlier directed
He also said that by that time, the Executive Secretary of the anti-corruption group would appear before the committee for the presentation on the petition against the Chairman of the CCT.
When asked to respond to the demand of the petitioners for more time, the Chairman of the CCT said that the petitioners seemed not to be serious about defending their petition, pointing out that the agency had a lot of administrative work to do than to be wasting time attending to unsubstantiated allegations.
However, the committee frowned on the attitude of the petitioners towards defending their petition since the defendant had been consistently available before the committee.
Chairman of the committee, Honourable Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, while adjourning the proceeding till Tuesday next week, warned that if the petitioners failed by then to defend their petition, they should consider it abandoned.
The Petitioners had petitioned the House over alleged misappropriation of public funds by the CCT Chairman which prompted it to direct Its Committee on public petitions to look into the petition.
