Manchester United Injury Latest – Paul Pogba An Injury Doubt For Arsenal Clash

Jose Mourinho was at pains to point out that he
wanted his Manchester United players to
sacrifice for their team after Sunday’s 1-3 win
over Swansea City. The Portuguese suggested
that he needed players who were willing to play
despite carrying knocks, or not being 100%,
which certainly threw criticism in the directions
of Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw, both of whom
made themselves unavailable for selection this
weekend due to knocks. Both England
internationals were said to be ‘baffled’ by their
manager’s words, having been reportedly using
pain-killing injections to get through games at
points this season.
One player that played through the pain at the
Liberty Stadium, and presumably gathered even
more favour with his manager was Paul Pogba.
The Frenchman scored an exquisite half-volley
in the first half to open the scoring before Zlatan
Ibrahimovic’s brace gave United total control of
proceedings.
Speaking to MUTV after the game, Pogba was
full of praise for his team’s first half
performance:
“I think every player wanted to win this game
and everyone was focused. We gave it our best
and gave everything, the first half was
unbelievable. It was one of the best first-half
performances so far and that’s how we have to
play, we have to give everything, we have to
press all together and when we play together we
play like that.” ( Quote via espn ).
Pogba also mentioned that he had been playing
with an injury. The Frenchman had to be
removed during the first half of United’s 2-1
defeat to Fenerbahce in Turkey on Thursday
night, and there were doubts over whether the
former Juventus midfielder would be fit for the
Premier League clash.
Speaking on the injury, Pogba said: “It is not
gone. It’s still here. I was fit enough to play and
after the gaffer put me in I played and I give my
best every time.”
Hopefully Pogba doesn’t aggravate the injury
while on national team duty with France. United
can’t afford not to have him fit for the Arsenal
clash.
Given that Mourinho has clearly got some issues
within the United dressing room regarding how
willing his players are to play for him and their
club, it will be particularly gratifying for the
former Chelsea boss that his club’s record
signing has little in the way of a mental block
when it comes to playing for United. Pogba has
notched four goals since his summer move, and
has been steadily improving the quality of his
performances over the last month or so;
Mourinho will be hoping that this is a trend
which continues.

Arsenal star injured during international break

send their highly paid players off to represent
their countries and then sit at home biting their
fingernails and hoping none of them get injured.
But they often do.
Spanish newspaper Marca report on Friday that
Arsenal may have an injury to be at least a little
worried about. Hector Bellerin has been away
with Spain’s U21 side, and playing against San
Marino (which somehow makes it all the more
annoying) he received a ‘nasty tackle’ to his
right ankle.
Nobody wants a nasty San Marino tackle to their
right ankle, and Bellerin was hurt. Marca say the
player is now awaiting the results of relevant
medical tests to determine the ‘extent of his
injury’.
The Spanish newspaper say that Bellerin didn’t
train yesterday with Spain but that was ‘as a
precaution’. It doesn’t sound ultra serious,
there’s no talk of a possible long lay-off, but it’ll
be a worry nonetheless.
With all due respect to San Marino, Wenger’s
face will be a picture when he hears Bellerin may
be out injured because he was tackled by a
trainee dentist, or similar.

FIFA confirm transfer ban on Real, Atletico Madrid

FIFA on Thursday dismissed appeals by
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid against a
ban on registering new players in the next
two transfer windows for irregularities in
the signing of foreign players under 18.
Real, who called the ruling “profoundly
unfair”, and Atletico were also fined 360,000
($358,000) and 900,000 Swiss Francs
respectively.
However, the two Spanish giants — last
season’s Champions League finalists —
have announced they will launch a final
appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport
(CAS).
“The FIFA Appeal Committee has decided to
reject the appeals lodged by Spanish clubs
Atletico de Madrid and Real Madrid and to
confirm in their entirety the decisions
rendered by the FIFA Disciplinary
Committee in the respective cases relating
to the protection of minors,” FIFA said in a
statement.
Both clubs were sanctioned in January, but
by appealing had temporarily held off the
ban during the transfer window which
closed last month.
They will now not be able to register any
new players in either of the next two
windows, in January 2017 and July-August
2017, before being able to do so once again
in January 2018.
Barcelona served a similar ban in 2015,
with an appeal to CAS proving unsuccessful
in their case.
European champions Real responded by
saying they will now go to the CAS in an
attempt to have the decision overturned “as
quickly as possible”.
“The club regrets the decision on the
ground that it is profoundly unfair and
contrary to the most elementary principles
of penal law,” read a statement posted on
their website.
“The club will begin the appropriate appeals
procedure before the Court of Arbitration for
Sport, requesting that the decision be
completely overturned, with absolute
confidence that said organisation will come
to an entirely favourable decision.
“Real Madrid will request that the procedure
be undertaken in an urgent manner in order
to obtain a decision from the CAS as
quickly as possible.”
Under international football rules, players
under 18 cannot be transferred to another
country, except in limited circumstances,
and all transfers need the approval of a
special FIFA committee.
Atletico insisted they had such clearance
from FIFA for the players under
investigation.
“Our club does not agree with the ruling
and therefore has decided to appeal before
the Court of Arbitration for Sport,” Atletico
said in a statement.
“Our organisation wishes to state that one
hundred percent of the licenses of our
players who are part of this investigation
and continue at the club have been
regularised by FIFA itself, receiving
authorisation from the sub-committee to
process the license and compete in different
(under-age) categories.”
Atletico used the close-season window to
make several new signings, including those
of France striker Kevin Gameiro from Sevilla
and Argentina midfielder Nicolas Gaitan
from Benfica.
Real had an unusually quiet summer in the
transfer market, although they did bring
Spain striker Alvaro Morata back to the
club from Juventus for around 30 million
euros ($34 million).

Arsenal: Lucas Perez Revelation Should Put Fears To Rest

Perez has revealed that Wenger has
been after him since January. Does
this revelation change anything?
One of the things that made Granit Xhaka’s
acquisition so special was that we knew
Wenger had been trying to bring him to
Arsenal for at least the past year. He had
touched base with him the previous summer,
followed up in January and by the time the
summer rolled around, it was a done deal.
That same dose of forethought was not
blatantly seen with new striker Lucas Perez
and it got many supporters worrying that
Lucas was a panic buy and nothing more
than a desperate attempt to fill the gap.
However, Lucas has come out and revealed
something that should put those fears to
bed.
“The Arsenal offer came just days before the
end of the transfer window. But I knew about
the interest of Arsenal for a long time. They
showed interest in me during the January
transfer window but then I couldn’t leave,” he
said, via the Daily Express . He went on:
“They also showed interest in me after the
end of La Liga. But then, they have their way
of working and the offer came only days
before the end of the market.”
By the sounds of it, that bit of forethought
that Wenger frequently uses was also applied
to Lucas, it was just put off in the summer
when another candidate or two rose to the
front (Wissam Ben-Yedder, Alexandre
Lacazette or, dare I say it again, Antoine
Griezmann).
So any calls of ‘desperation’ should be put to
rest. That is, unless Lucas is blowing smoke
in our faces to try to distract us from a true
act of desperation, but there is no reason to
believe that ridiculous conspiracy theory.
Lucas has all the makings of a Wenger
signing. He is extremely under the radar
(even moreso in January), he is a winger-
turned-striker, couldn’t capitalize on massive
early potential and has a fantastic team
spirit. Or team play, if team spirit sounds too
corny for you.
I keep citing this stat , but he created eight
assists and two chances per game last
season on a team that finished 15th in La
Liga. As if 17 goals wasn’t enough. He made
the most out of a bad situation in his first
year at a new position.
Wenger is a great judge of talent. Sure, he
has made some missteps, everyone has. But
some of the talents he has unearthed have
been incredibly special, especially the ones
he really sets his mind to.
And now we know that Wenger has wanted
him for eight months? If this doesn’t
invigorate your faith in the Spaniard, then I
don’t know what will. I guess some goals for
Arsenal would be a good start.

tough decision to turn down a move to
Arsenal before bumping into Gunners boss
Arsene Wenger during Euro 2016.
Vardy was left in his hotel room weighing up
a move to Emirates Stadium after the north

Wenger's overtures and eventually signed a
new deal with Leicester - something he said
always felt like the right thing to do.
"I was in a hotel room for many hours of
every day with nothing to do," he said.

"You had a lot of time on your hands. I am
not going to beat around the bush - every
time I thought about it, and every aspect of it
I thought about, both my head and my heart
were saying to stay, which is why I made my
decision to stay.
"Deep down if you don't think it is right move
for you, you don't do it. It is as simple as
that. You get that much time to think about
every single thing down to the tea lady.
"You think about what might happen, what
might not, where you could be, where not.
Every time I thought about every little thing,
both head and heart were saying, 'You need
to stay'.
"In my professional life it was the hardest
decision. It was hard but, like I said, when it
came to my head and my heart it was an

Rio 2016: Shame as Team Nigeria march in tracksuits

It was another show of shame for Team Nigeria on Friday in Rio — after the late arrival of the U-23 football team on Thursday — as the country’s contingent, led by table tennis star Funke Oshonaike, filed out for the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games on Friday dressed in tracksuits.

The opening ceremony of the Olympics is usually used by participating teams to display their country’s traditional wears and culture before over one billion viewers globally but Team Nigeria marched with tracksuits in Rio after the official kits earmarked for the outing did not arrive in Rio on time, according to reports.

Alexander Wolff, a sports writer covering the Games tweeted, “Nigeria, marching in sweats because official outfits didn’t make it to Rio. Can we agree that they’re a country to pull for these two weeks?”

In the past, Team Nigeria were known for their colourful outfits, which showcased the country’s rich culture, at such international sporting events.

The original attire for the Games was actually made by Nigerian designer, David Bowler, and was showcased to President Muhammadu Buhari in July, when Team Nigeria paid him a visit.

Our correspondent learnt that with Bowler’s design the male athletes would have appeared in typical South South dressing spotting hats with the women’s uniform the contrasting wear of a Nigerian woman with modern attitude in her long cape dress, tying a turban.

Sydney 2000 Olympics gold medallist Enefiong Udo-Obong was confounded that Bowler’s design was abandoned for the  tracksuits in Brazil, suggesting it might not be unconnected with corrupt practices by officials.

“The style (of Bowler’s design) may have left questions in the lips of many but they were gorgeous and proper. It would have showcased our ladies as beautiful people and our men as gentlemen. It would have sold our local designer to the world as our version or answer to Gucci and Calvin Klein and the rest. Instead we did not. Despite months of sleepless nights to design the attire and lots of money to make samples; despite the fashion parade the (sports) minister did to showcase the uniform with athletes to model it to the President, we did not use the smartly made dresses,” Udo-Obong wrote in talkwithenee.blogspot.com.ng.

“The reason why? Someone decided that instead of paying the designer money for mass production, he could get kickbacks if he just gave a contract to his stooge. So, we neglected the designs which we did not appreciate because it was given free to us by the designer and hurriedly assembled the carpenter-type tracksuits. We did not even deem it fit, if we wanted tracksuits to get from Yali-Yali, our own brand made by former sprint queen, Mary Onyali. At least we would have promoted something Nigerian.”

Meanwhile, Oshonaike and Edem Offiong crashed out of Round 1 of the table tennis women’s singles event on Saturday. Oshonaike, Team Nigeria’s assistant captain, was beaten 4-2 by Adriana Diaz of Puerto Rico while Offiong lost 4-1 to Belarusian Viktoria Pavlovich.

The national U-23 football team will play Sweden in their second Group B game today in Manaus. The Nigerians lead the group with three points after Thursday’s 5-4 defeat of Japan despite arriving late to the match venue.

Mikel changes his name

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has changed his name officially after a registration error 13 years ago.

The Nigeria international was born in Jos as John Michael Nchekwube Obinna back in 1987, starting his footballing career with Plateau United.

After two years there, Mikel moved to Lyn in Norway and then earned a switch to the Premier League with Chelsea, where he has been now for a decade.

The central midfielder has been known as John Obi Mikel for years, but he has now changed his name to Mikel John Obi, as reported by the Mirror.

The reason behind that is the word ‘Mikel’ was never actually a part of the midfielder’s name – many felt it was short for Michael. It only became a thing when the Nigerian FA mistakenly used Mikel instead of Michael on his submission form for the 2003 FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

Jamie Vardy agrees Arsenal move then waits for wounds to heal

Jamie Vardy is in “transfer turmoil,” says the Sun. The paper, which stated Vardy would join Arsenal yesterday, says the Leicester City and England striker is torn between remaining with the Foxes and joining the Gunners.
A “source” says Vardy “does not know” if he will join the Gunners for £120,000-a-week and any bonus form a £20m transfer fee. The paper says Vardy is “prepared” to wait until after the Euros in France to make his decision”.
In the Mail, the advice is “SORT IT VARDY – England manager Roy Hodgson wants decision on star’s Arsenal switch”.
But the Mail notes that the decision has been made, stating that Vardy has “verbally agreed a three-year deal with an option of a further 12 months“. Add to this the Mirror’s claim that Vardy’s agent instigated the Arsenal move and you have player not exactly “in turmoil” and “tormented”, as the Mail’s mind-reading expert Matt Lawton says he is.
Is is really such agony to be deciding between playing for Leicester, the Premier League champions where you are adored, or moving to one of Europe’s biggest clubs for an extra £4o,000 a week? Come on. Vardy must love it. If Vardy has given his word that he will join the Gunners, this waiting for an official announcement looks like a PR job.

Kidd says it is the “most un-Arsenal transfer move  imaginable, making neither footballing no economic sense.” Vardy is the Football Writers’ player of the year. He is a proven winner. At 29 he is the same age Robin Van Persie was when he joined Manchester Untied and made them title winners. The Arsenal fans will love his work rate and desire to win. But Kidd says Vardy doesn’t score goals the Arsenal way (after lots and lots of passing). He says Vardy will be on the bench as Arsenal’s Plan B.

Arsenal to sign Riyah Mahrez for 25m

Arsenal are interested in signing Riyad Mahrez this summer, say reports The North Londoners are set to make an astonishing £25million offer to bring Riyad Mahrez to the Emirates Stadium this summer, as per reports.

The above report is according to transfer expert Tancredi Palmeri who himself claims the Gunners have submitted the said amount for the 25-year-old.

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger is understood to have drawn up a shortlist of potential transfer targets.

The same report goes on to say that, the Algerian international has also attracted interest from other clubs in recent weeks.

The north London club officials reportedly met up with the winger's representatives a number of times to make sure he's open to the move before tabling a bid.

The Algerian international's fine form has attracted interest from Arsenal and Barcelona, with reports suggesting both clubs are lining up bids for his services this summer.

Arsenal manager is also keen to sign Mahrez's teammate Jamie Vardy and last week made a £20m bid to trigger the 29-year-old's release clause.

However, Express Sport understands Vardy, who netted 24 goals this season, is not prepared to make a decision on his future until after his Euro 2016 campaign with England.

Cesc Fabregas responds to Jose Mourinho's 'betrayal' comments

It did not take long for Chelsea's 2-1 loss to Leicester City on Monday evening to go viral, but it was Jose Mourinho's post-match comments that left a lasting impact as the manager appeared to place the blame solely at the feet of the under-performing players.

Chelsea suffered their ninth loss of the Premier League season and are just one point above the relegation zone after 16 matches.

For Mourinho, who cut an unhappy figure in the dugout at the King Power Stadium having witnessed his Blues concede goals to Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy, it was a case of the players not following his instruction.

Some pundits even hinted that it could be the beginning of the end for the Special One's tenure at Stamford Bridge.



Owner Roman Abramovich continues to show confidence in Mourinho, though, but the latter is under intense pressure to deliver a sustained run of results that will push Chelsea further up the league ladder.

To do that, he must have the support of his players - something midfielder Francesc Fabregas appears to have for him, in public at least.

"We have to take responsibility [of performances and league position]," Cesc explained during a Q&A session on Sky Sports HQ's Facebook page when pressed for a response to Mourinho's comments on Monday that he felt betrayed by the team.

"If you are a big player, you perform and behave like a big player. We [Chelsea] have big players. The attitude always has to be spot on.

"We have to better than what we're seeing right now," he concluded.

Arsenal optimistic of having French international back for Bayern Munich clash

The report claims that the French international defender will not be risked for the clash against Watford in the Premier League following the international break, as the game against Bayern will make or break the 12-time FA Cup winners' Champions League dream this season.
Meanwhile, according to the Daily Mail, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini, who were both out with a hamstring injury and a dead leg respectively, are expected to return for the clash against Watford on 17 October.
The French midfielder suffered an injury during the north London club's 5-2 win over Leicester City, while the Arsenal skipper also suffered a slight muscular problem in the same game. Their return to the first-team will provide Wenger with much needed options in midfield owing to the number of games coming up following the international break.
