A
Federal High Court in Abuja, on Wednesday, ordered that a former
governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako and his son, Abdulaziz, should
be remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) till tomorrow, when applications for their bail would
be heard.
The court also ordered that a former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, be remanded in prison custody.
Nyako and his son were arraigned before Justice Evoh Chukwu on charges bordering on money laundering, while Ohakim was arraigned before Justice Adeniyi Ademola for similar offence.
While Nyako and his son were to be remanded in the custody of the EFCC till tomorrow, when their bail application would be heard, the court slated today for argument on the bail application of the former Imo State governor.
Nyako and his son are facing a 37-count charge of money laundering, amounting to about N40 billion and they pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.
Ohakim also pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge slammed against him by the anti-graft agency.
Justice Ademola, while delivering ruling on Ohakim’s bail application, filed by his counsel, Mr Chris Uche, ordered that the defence counsel serve the prosecution counsel with his response within 24 hours.
He also ordered that Ohakim be allowed access to his wife, Chioma and medication while in custody and should be brought to court at 12 noon today.
EFCC’s counsel, Mr Festus Keyamo, had, in his submission, objected to the bail application for Ohakim on the ground that the ex-governor had refused to honour the commission’s several invitations.
Justice Chukwu, after hearing Nyakos’s counsel, Mr Kanu Agabi, pleading for time to familiarise with the charges, ordered that the accused be remanded in EFCC custody till tomorrow.
